For my poster initially I was planning to go with something lighthearted, something that would depict bright characters and colors deflecting from what's currently happening all around us right now. However, when this zine caught my eye, I couldn't help but be captured by the idea that expanded on the end of the world through media.
It has been no secret that throughout time, media such as movies and books or magazines have slowly been dropping and disturbing the idea of the end of the world more often at a constant rate. In addition to this, our current state of the world reflects this thoroughly, with many wars waging throughout different countries as well as unavoidable life ending solar storms approaching closer to time, the idea of the end of the world isn't so unrealistic anymore.
Including the movie that this article is based on (Melancholia by Lars Von Trier), other medias have slowly been building up on this idea throughout the years, such as the game ‘Last of Us’, the movie ‘Don't Look Up’ and as well one of the more recent coming out his year ‘Leave the World Behind’.
I believe that the topic of the end of the world is something important to be discussed and to be accepted of this is why I chose the movie ‘Melancholia’. This psychological movie focuses on both the philosophical aspects of nihilism and absurdism, Justine representing nihilism and Claire Existentialism/Absurdism, which I find greatly fascinating.
Illustrating these pieces, I found it greatly difficult to navigate what media i should stick to, initially i thought I was going to go for Lino print but when i tried this out it seemed to have a sort of unserious comical take on it, which I greatly disliked.
Therefore, I settled on using inks this time around, as it created a better flow throughout the pieces and allowed me to control the undertones of this illustration easier.
In the end I liked how my work turned out, although I can admit it lacks exploration and development throughout time. Next time around I would like to see myself delve deeper into topics and research more.
